A User Interface for Lie Optics

Abstract

This document describes preliminary findings on a computer program called OpticalApp. This program was developed at RIACA, the Research Institute for Applications of Computer Algebra, in the framework of the Geometrical Optics Project.

OpticalApp is a program with a user friendly inteface that resembles to a great extent the user interface of existing, numerical lens design software. But internally it operates in quite a different manner: it is based upon Lie methods for (geometrical) optics, or more specifically, upon an arithmetic of so-called aberration polynomials.
