Learning environments can be either stand-alone or network based. In this talk, the network based learning environment is characterised and the components of the network based learning environment are discussed. In network based learning environments the available bandwidth often restricts what is possible to do. For example, it is not possible to use video conferencing applications on normal modem connections.
However, real-time connections between teachers, content specialists and students or connections to media servers can enhance the learning process. In the talk the possibilities of real-time connections to remote site (such as the university or to the organization delivering the learning material) will be analysed.
As an example of a fast network connection to the local campus in Pori, the ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology is discussed. ADSL system in Pori can deliver up to 512Kbps to both directions simultaneously that makes it ideal for distance learning applications.
