International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation 1996
by Michael Kalkbrener, ETH Zürich (Switzerland) michael.kalkbrener@math.ethz.ch
ISSAC'96 took place at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
in Zurich, Switzerland. On Tuesday, July 23, Laureano Gonzalez-
Vega, Teo Mora, Peter Paule and Rafael Sendra gave tutorials
on
- polynomial system solving,
- symbolic summation,
- rational algebraic curves.
The conference started on Wednesday, July 24, and ended on Friday,
July 26. 173 people attended ISSAC'96: 115 from Europe, 50 from
America and 8 from other continents. Harold Edwards, Stanly
Steinberg and Volker Weispfenning gave invited talks. 39 research
papers were presented in sessions on
- polynomial algorithms,
- algebraic algorithms,
- Groebner bases,
- system issues,
- solutions of equations,
- groups and algebras,
- differential equations,
- linear algebra,
- applications.
Additionally 29 papers were presented in two poster sessions. In
the frame of the conference several companies and universities
exhibited software and books:
- COMSOL AG,
- Konrad Zuse Zentrum Berlin,
- Macsyma Inc.,
- Numerical Algorithms Group,
- Springer Verlag Heidelberg,
- Texas Instruments,
- University of Paderborn.
The conference was sponsored by ACM SIGSAM and SIGNUM, Telekurs
Holding AG, The Numerical Algorithms Group, Ltd., The Swiss
National Fund, Waterloo Maple Inc. and Wolfram Research Inc.
