by Werner Nickel, University of St Andrews, Scotland, United Kingdom.
Email: werner@dcs.st-and.ac.uk

A workshop on the use of GAP in research was held at the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences of the University of St Andrews, Scotland, from April, 6 to April 11, 1997. The intention of the workshop was to introduce the participants to the program system GAP (Groups, Algorithms and Programming) and show by examples how GAP can be used as a tool in research problems. Information on GAP can be obtained from its Web page http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~gap

Although the workshop was open to everybody, it targeted students at postgraduate level. Grants from the London Mathematical Society had been secured to help UK students with their traveling costs and help to pay expenses for the main speakers. A total of 47 participants came to the workshop, 15 of which were local students or members of staff. Half of the non-local participants came from the UK, the rest came from countries as diverse as Austria, Germany, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland and the USA. Of the 32 non-local participants, 19 were postgraduate students, 13 of which were students from the UK.
